Aftercare

The typical healing process should go as follows:

  • Following the procedure, leave your tattoo wrapped for 1-2 hours.

  • After removing the wrap, wash with a non-scented, antibacterial soap and let air-dry. I recommend Dial Gold antibacterial soap, but there are other brands out there that will work as well. Do not re-wrap the tattoo.

  • Apply a thin film of water-based healing ointment. I use Inkeeze for my tattoos, but Aquaphor or Vitamin A&D ointment are also fine choices. Do not go heavy on this - less is more. The wound needs to breathe.

  • Wash the tattoo 2-3 times per day for the next 2-3 weeks, or until peeling and scabbing ceases. Apply the healing ointment as needed, keeping the tattoo moisturized.

  • Switch over to a non-scented, moisturizing lotion once the initial healing is complete. I personally use Lubriderm, but Jergens, Cocoa butter, or other options work as well.

Things to be aware of:

  • Your tattoo will become quite itchy during the healing process. Please avoid itching or picking at any scabs that form. I “pat” my tattoos when they start to drive me nuts to avoid damaging the piece.

  • Bruising may occur due to multiple factors - especially in sensitive areas. This is normal, and will heal along with the tattoo in time.

  • Avoid submerging in water. Swimming, baths, hot tubs, etc., should be avoided until the tattoo is healed. Showers are totally fine!

  • Avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight. No tanning.

  • Tattoos heal differently for each person and for different parts of the body. Be patient, keep it clean, keep it moisturized, and it will heal.

  • Infected tattoos are rare, but not something to be taken lightly. If you are worried that your tattoo is infected, please contact your doctor as soon as possible.
